WRITTEN POLICIES OF THE COLLEGE OF NURSING
PHILOSOPHY
The College of Nursing, Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Dimapur believes that a good health enables an individual to lead a psychologically, socially, spiritually and an economically stable and productive life. Every individual, family and community has a responsibility in maintaining their health, as well as a healthy surrounding and environment.
Nursing has a significant role in the health of every individual. Nursing contributes a vital role in the health care delivery system. Nursing is committed to the implementation of the various National Health Policies and programs. It aims in identifying the specific health needs of the people in planning and implementation of the care in collaboration with the other health team members.
Nursing practice is aimed at comprehensive approach, keeping in the promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of care to the individual and community. Nursing practice is based upon application of various concepts from the researched based studies. It is an evidence based practice.
Nursing program is directed to the development of Knowledge , skill and attitude and also the standard required for practice of professional nursing and midwifery as envisaged in National Health Policy 2002. The course prepares the student to fulfil the personal, social and professional obligations with a sense of commitment towards the health of the community. The teachers have the significant role to enable the students to learn in all clinical, theoretical and extra-curricular activities focusing on the motto, vision, mission and core values. They create a conducive environment, directed to a lifelong learning.

Presented on 22nd October 2019 in Ao Meeting, few corrections were made and accepted on 25th Feb 2020 with modification except the logo. The logo was modified and presented on June 9th 2020. There were five logos and the above logo was accepted.
GENERAL POLICY
B.Sc Nursing:
The B.Sc. nursing degree program is a four-year fulltime program comprising eight semesters, which prepares B.Sc.nursing graduates qualified to practice nursing and midwifery in a variety of settings in either public/government or private
healthcare settings. It adopts credit system and semester system as per the Authority guidelines with minor modifications
suitable to professional education in a hybrid form. The program encompasses foundational, core and elective courses. The
choice-based system is applicable to electives only and is offered in the form of modules. Modular learning is also integrated
in the foundational as well as core courses that is mandatory.
The program prepares nurses and midwives for generalist nursing including midwifery practice. Knowledge acquisition
related to wellness, health promotion, illness, disease management and care of the dying is core to nursing practice. Mastery
of competencies is the main focus. Students are provided with opportunities to learn a whole range of skills in addition to
acquiring knowledge related to nursing practice (nursing and midwifery). This is achieved through learning in skill
lab/simulated lab and clinical environment. Simulation will be integrated throughout the curriculum wherever feasible to
enable them to develop competencies before entry into real field of practice.
The aims of the undergraduate program are to
1. Produce knowledgeable competent nurses and midwives with clear critical thinking skills who are caring, motivated,
assertive and well-disciplined responding to the changing needs of profession, healthcare delivery system and society.
2. Prepare them to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative healthcare services in any healthcare setting.
3. Prepare nurses and midwives who can make independent decisions in nursing situations within the scope of practice,
protect the rights of individuals and groups and conduct research in the areas of nursing practice and apply evidence based practice.
4. Prepare them to assume role of practitioner, teacher, supervisor and manager in all healthcare settings.
The B.Sc. Graduate nurse will be able to:
1.Utilize critical thinking to synthesize knowledge derived from physical, biological, behavioural sciences, and humanities, in the practice of professional nursing and midwifery.
2. Practice professional nursing and midwifery competently and safely in diverse settings, utilizing caring, critical thinking and therapeutic nursing interventions with individuals, families, populations and communities at any developmental stage and with varied lived health experiences.
3. Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with national health policies and programs.
4. Integrate professional caring into practice decisions that encompass values, ethical, and moral and legal aspects of nursing.
5. Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of self and others.
6. Apply concepts of leadership, autonomy and management to the practice of nursing and midwifery to enhance quality and safety in health care.
7. Utilize the latest knowledge and skills related to information and technology to enhance patient outcomes.
8. Communicate effectively with patients, peers, and all health care providers.
9. Utilize the requisite knowledge, skills and technologies to practice independently and collaboratively with all health professionals applying the principles of safety and quality improvement.
10. Integrate research findings and nursing theory in decision making in evidence-based practice.
11. Accept responsibility and accountability for the effectiveness of one‘s own nursing and midwifery practice and professional growth as a learner, clinician and leader.
12. Participate in the advancement of the profession to improve health care for the betterment of the global society.
Admission of Students
Selection of the candidates should be based on the merit of the entrance examination held by University or competent authority.
Eligibility Criteria for admission – B. Sc Nursing (Basic) (INC Regulations)
Admission requirements:
– The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in which admission is sought. Maximum is 35 yrs
– 10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) 45% & English Core/English Elective with aggregate of 45% marks SC/ST & OBC 40% from recognized board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/ SSCE/HSCE or other equivalent Board.
– Students appearing in 10+2 examination in Science conducted by National Institute of Open School with 45% marks
– Colour blind candidates are eligible provided that colour corrective contact lens and spectacles are worn by such candidates.
– 5% Disability reservation to be considered for disabled candidates with a disability of loco-motor to the tune of
– 40% to 50% of the lower extremity Student shall be medically fit
– Duration: 4 Years including Internship
Eligibility Criteria for admission – GNM
Admission requirements:
- The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st Dec. of the year of admission. The upper limit is 35 years.
- No age bar for ANM/LHV.
- The minimum educational requirements shall be passing of :
- 10 + 2 passed preferably Science with (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) & English with aggregate of 40% marks.
- 10+2 passed in Arts (Mathematics, Biotechnology, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy) and English Core/ English Elective or Health care Science – Vocational stream ONLY, passing out from recognized Board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/ HSCE or other equivalent Board with 40% marks.
- 10 + 2 vocational ANM under CBSE Board or other equivalent board from the school and recognized by Indian Nursing Council with 40% marks.
- Registered as ANM with State Nursing Council.
- Student qualified in 10 + 2 Arts or Science examination or Health care Science – Vocational stream ONLY conducted by National Institute of Open School with 40% marks.
- 5% relaxation is permitted to SC/ST students.
- Candidate must be Medically fit.
Entrance / Selection Test
Selection of candidates is based on the merit of the entrance examination held by the College of Nursing
Duration: 3 years
Eligibility Criteria for admission – B. Sc Nursing (Post Basic)
Admission requirements:
1. 10 + 2 + GNM: Should have Diploma in Nursing and be registered nurse and Midwife in the Assam Nurses’ Midwives and Health Visitor’s Council accepted by the authority of the University.
2. Those who have done 10+1 in or before 1986
3. After GNM with Registration certificate from the State Nursing Council, the candidate can be permitted to join the Post Basic Nursing without work experience.
4. Candidate must be Medically fit.
Entrance / Selection Test
Selection of candidates is based on the merit of the entrance examination held by the College of Nursing
Duration: 2 years.

INSTITUTIONAL POLICY TO CONDUCT EXAMINATION
· The institutional policy is laid down to conduct the examination is based on the guidelines of Indian Nursing Council.
Internal Assessment
1. Regular periodic assessments shall be conducted throughout the course. A minimum of three term written examinations and two practical examinations shall be conducted in each subject during a year. The term written examination preceding the University examination may be similar to the pattern of University examination. The average marks of the three performances shall be taken into consideration for the award of internal assessment marks including the unit tests
2. The weightage for the internal Assessment as follows:
Internal Assessment 25 marks : Theory
– Unit Tests – 10 marks
– Assignments – 10 marks-
– Term Exam – 5 marks
Internal Assessment 100 marks : Practical
– Model Practical Examination 20 marks
– Oral / Viva : 5 marks
– Clinical Evaluation : 10 marks
– Practical record : 10 marks
– Observational /field visit : 5 marks
– Clinical Assignment : 50 marks
3. A minimum of one practical examination shall be conducted in each subject (wherever practical have been included in the curriculum) and grades of ongoing clinical evaluation to be considered for the award of internal assessment marks.
4. The internal exam results are declared three weeks after the exam. The answer scripts are discussed with the students when distributing to the concerned students. The university results are declared as and when it is issued by the University through the Principal’s office.
5. A minimum of 50% of marks is mandatory in theory and practical separately in each subject/practical for permitting the candidates to University Examinations.
6. A failed candidate in any subject should be provided an opportunity to improve her/his internal assessment marks by conducting a minimum of two examinations in theory and practical separately and the average may be considered for improvement. If a student does not perform well even after the improvement exams he/she is directed for remedial coachings.
7. If a failed candidate does not appear for any “Improvement Mark Examinations” in the failed subject(s) the internal marks awarded for the previous examination shall be carried over for his/her subsequent appearance(s).
University Examination: For Regular and mid-course (Supplementary) improvement
Regulation:
1. A candidate must have minimum of 80% attendance (irrespective of the kind of absence) in theory and practical in each subject for appearing for examination.
2. A candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the practical areas before award of degree.
3. The weightage for the External paper is: 75 marks
4. Submission of practical record books: The concerned Head of the Department shall evaluate the Practical Record (Internal Evaluation) and the Practical Record shall be submitted to the Principal 15 days prior to the commencement of the theory examination and to be presented to the external university practical examiner. At the time of Practical Examination, each candidate shall submit to the Examiners his / her Practical Record Book duly certified by the Head of the Department as a bonafide record of the work done by the candidate
5. Minimum pass marks shall be 50% in each of the theory and practical areas before award of degree.
6. An examiner should be a lecturer or above in a college of nursing with M.Sc. (N) in concerned subject and minimum of 3 years of teaching experience. To be an examiner for nursing foundations course faculty having M.Sc. (N) with any specialty shall be considered.
7. A candidate has to pass in theory and practical exam separately in each of the paper. If a candidate fails in either theory or practical paper he/she has to re-appear for both the papers (Theory and Practical).
8. The candidates if failed in more than one/ two subjects in any nursing program they can be promoted to next year. A candidate can take any number of attempts with a condition that the maximum period to complete the course successfully should not exceed 8 years. However, all papers need to be cleared before appearing in the final examination. Such a candidate is made to appear the supplementary exam (Mid-course improvement) within a period of 6 months.
CONDUCT OF THEORY EXAMINATIONS:
1. An admit card is issued by the Principal’s office 2 days before the commencement of exams.
2. Theory examinations are held in the designated classrooms.
3. The examiner should be a Lecturer or above in a college of Nursing with M.Sc. (N) in the concerned subject and minimum of 3 years of teaching experience. The exam is invigilated by two internal teachers. An external teacher also invigilates for verification
4. Maximum number of candidates for theory examination should not exceed 20 in a classroom.
5. Allotment of the seats with the student’s roll number is pasted on the exam tables ahead of the scheduled dates. The question papers must be kept sealed, maintaining confidentiality, which will be opened 5 minutes before the commencement of exam.
6. The invigilator must put their signature on the answer scripts for authentication which must be sealed after the exam.
7. The answer booklets are given dummy numbers to remove bias and submitted to the principal after sealing in an envelope to be submitted to the University.
8. Should a student misbehave or any act of misconduct is reported by the invigilator, the incident is taken into account as a very serious offence and action is taken as per the rules laid by the disciplinary committee.
PRACTICAL EXAMINATION:
1. All practical examinations must be held in the respective clinical areas if not possible Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is conducted in the college laboratory.
2. Viva is conducted by both examiners
3. Maximum number of candidates for practical examination should not exceed 20 per day.
4. The examiner should be a Lecturer or above in a college of Nursing with M.Sc. (N) in the concerned subject and minimum of 3 years of teaching experience.
5. Faculty with M.Sc. (N) qualification and required teaching experience in any Specialty shall be considered for conducting Practical Examination in the subject “Nursing Foundation”.
6. One internal and one external examiner should jointly conduct practical examination for each student.
Evaluation and Announcement of the Result
· University Examination papers are corrected internally by two examiners of the same subject. Practical examination is conducted by one external and one internal.
· The Nursing subjects theory papers are corrected by the external examiners and scrutinized by the internal examiner.
· The result will be announced in the board of examination committee meeting by the subject teachers where all the subject teachers and the director or Deputy director responsible for academic will be present.
· Grace marks of five can be given, if there are two section with a marks of 38 & 37 the grace mark will be 3 and 2 respectively.
· One person cannot get grace mark for more than three subjects. After the presentation and the subject teachers come to the consensus of the marks.
· Each subject marks will be entered in the University Mark sheet and send it to university for announcement of the result.
CARRY OVER OF FAILED SUBJECTS:
a. A candidate has to pass in theory and practical examinations separately in each of the paper. If a candidate fails in either theory or practical examinations, he/she has to reappear for both (theory and practical).
b. The failed candidates in any number of subjects can appear for the ensuing examinations in subsequent September/April.
c. The candidate shall not be permitted into FINAL year examination unless she/he has passed all the subjects of the I, II & III year.
REVALUATION / RETOTALLING OF ANSWER PAPERS: Should a student have any grievance(s) in his/her answer scripts or marks the student can approach the Principal’s office in written.

- Award of Excellence
– Student who has scored the highest marks (adding all the years of marks) at the end of the year
– Should not have failed in any subjects in any of the years.
– No suspension in any of the years for any reasons
- Certificate of honour:
– First certificate of honor (>75%)

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR DISCIPLINE THE STUDENTS IN CIHSR
Introduction: CIHSR is a Christ centred institution that works towards the transformation of the society by providing quality healthcare and developing health professionals who can compassionately deliver quality healthcare.
It is vital to maintain discipline in the college, hostel and campus. Discipline ensures a healthy learning environment. Any incident of indiscipline should be tackled immediately by the concerned authorities and necessary action should be taken to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future. Therefore SOPs are necessary to guide the faculty to take action in standardized manner. Rules and regulations of the hostel and college are explained to all students during the admission and are given in writing. This SOP is restricted to breach of discipline in the hostel / College / hospital.
Definition:
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is an established procedure to be followed in breach of discipline or misconduct to ensure discipline of the students in the hostel or College of Nursing.
Academic Areas:
This includes the college library, classroom, laboratory and examination hall. Any incident must be reported to the principal through class coordinator and course coordinator.
a. Library:
1. Eating, drinking and talking loudly in the library is prohibited. Repeated offenses despite verbal warnings, will incur a written memo and the student will not be allowed to use the library or borrow for a month.
2. Tearing of pages in books or journals is prohibited. Any student or staff found guilty of the act will be asked to replace the damaged book/ journal or pay the cost (if unable to procure the book/ journal)
3. Students who are supposed to come to library for study hours must report to the warden and tutor responsible for supervision, if ill and unable to attend library hours. Students who fail to do so will be asked to use the library from 6.30 pm to 9pm compulsorily for a week.
4. Use of Mobile phone is in the academic areas is restricted for the students. Mobile phones found in the possession of students in these areas will be confiscated and held for 6 months in principal’s office.
b. Classroom/ Clinical areas
1. Students are expected to be in the classroom according to the time given in the time table. Grace time of 10 minutes will be given; student will not be allowed to attend the class if late beyond the grace time. Proper explanation should be given for late coming through the class coordinator.
2. Use of Mobile phone is in the clinical areas is restricted for the students. Mobile phones found in the possession of students in these areas will be confiscated and held for 6 months in principal’s office.
3. Chewing tobacco or pan and other tobacco products in the campus is strictly prohibited. Students found guilty will be fined a sum of Rs. 500 and will be asked to wear a “No Tobacco” badge for a month.
4. Students should make special effort to be present for all class test unless he/she is very sick and is admitted to the hospital. Students absent for first test must seat for a retest, wherein the student will be awarded a maximum of 50% only of the test marks.
5. Copying/Cheating for the exam or test, in any form is unethical. Any student found guilty, will be punished suspension for a week or month depending on the severity of the act.
6. Forgery is punishable act. Any student found guilty of the act will be severely dealt with; suspension for a week or month to six months depending on the severity of the act.
7. Any student disturbing the classroom environment by talking, eating, sleeping etc, while attending the class, will be given a verbal warning. Repeated offences will incur a written memo.
8. Medication error in the clinical areas will be reported to the principal through the Nursing Superintendent. First time memo will be given and asked to take a class on administration of medication to the classmates. Second time memo and asked to take class for the juniors. Third time error lead to one day suspension.
9. The coffee break and lunch or dinner time given is 15 & 30 minutes respectively. Students who take breaks longer than that allotted time will not be allowed to go for coffee break for a week.
Hostel:
Any breach of discipline should be reported through warden and Vice principal in charge of hostel to the principal
1. Drinking, Chewing tobacco or pan and other tobacco products in the campus is strictly prohibited. Students found guilty will be given a memo with a sum of Rs. 500. She will be asked to wear a “No Tobacco” badge for a month and take a class for the classmates.
2. Stealing from other students in the hostel/ college/ clinical areas is a condemning act. If found, students can face suspension for a week or month to six months depending on the severity of the act.
3. Students found causing damage to hostel property must pay double the cost of the damage/ item.
4. Hostel Roll call at 6 & 9pm is mandatory. Students who are in the library can report to the warden through librarian, students who are sick send word to the warden through their room mates.
*Students if absent for roll call more than five times and less than ten times in a month will be asked to use the library for one month continuously.
*Absenteeism for roll call for more than ten times to 20 times in a month , will be incur a written memo and compulsory library usage in the evenings for one month continuously .More than 20 times in a month will be asked to use the library for three months continuously. Library attendance must be submitted through librarian to principal. Repeaters will be suspended.
5. Going out for late pass / night pass should be reported in writing in the outing card with a signature from warden and then hostel in charge. Students must report to the hostel by 4pm in winter and 5pm in summer, a letter from the parents or guardian must be submitted to the warden.
6. Going out beyond the stores near the main gate is not allowed, if found, Saturday outings will be cancelled for a month.
7. Students found missing from the hostel during roll call or night, if found guilty vacation days will be reduced or suspension depends on the severity of the act. Parents will be called to the college to inform.
8. Special leave for death of parents/ grand parents/ siblings and marriage for the siblings can be given. In case of marriage, application for the leave accompanied by a copy of the wedding invitation must be submitted to the principal one week before the day the student desires to avail the leave. It should be requested through class coordinator to course coordinator & principal in writing. On return, students must report in writing to the course coordinator the very next day.
9. Any students taking leave of absence, will be fined Rs 500/day and the make up days will be double the time.
10. When the students become sick and extending the leave must produce valid medical certificate, if not it will be considered as absent. The student will be fined Rs 500/day & Make up days will be double the time.
· Any suspension for violating the rules of the hostel or classroom can be days to maximum six months depends on the severity of the act.
